Abstract

A manuscript anthology from the rural Midlands (now British Library Add. MS 82370) allows us to reconstruct full texts of two broadside ballads that describe the Armada victory celebration at St. Paul's Church on November 24, 1588. Both poems were known to exist from their entries in the Stationers' Register, although all printed copies seem to have perished. These eyewitness accounts of the ceremony add details about the event not recounted in other sources. Perhaps the most surprising of these new insights is the likelihood that the service concluded with the singing of two hymns of thanksgiving composed by the Queen herself. [A. F. M. and S. W. M.]
